This processor is overheating and running hot during idle. That’s unusual.
The Ryzen 7000 lineup tends to heat up more than expected, reaching around 60°C during tasks like browsing or watching YouTube. My Ryzen 7700X hits 60°C when starting a YouTube video. It’s normal and nothing to be concerned about.
Are you sure? They usually run cooler when not in use, about 40-50°C, and reach 50-70°C during games.
It doesn't make much sense for a 120W chip to stay cool at 60 degrees while performing well. My 8700k stays around 45 degrees even with a decent stock cooler. I think air gaps between the thermal paste might be the issue.
The Ryzen 7000 line is built to run hot by design. It aims for a temperature of 95°C and pushes to hit that before restricting power or clock speed. The processor doesn’t mind being at 47°C, 60°C or 87°C—it focuses on reaching 95°C (85°C for X3D) as the target before anything else. Because of this, it fluctuates a lot in temperature, particularly during light to medium workloads. At 40-50°C during idle, you saw 60°C while browsing, which isn’t idle. It maintains high clock speeds to keep things responsive, which slightly raises temperatures. There’s nothing to worry about as long as your gaming temps are within range. You might try a PBO of -30 and adjust the curve optimizer. Comparing it to other CPU designs isn’t fair—this is just normal for the architecture.
You haven't actually given us a temp (that matters) yet. If you can provide proper load temps, all core clockspeeds and and the score in Cinebench, we can evaluate if there is actually a problem. The idle doesn't really mean anything and half the time, I find that people don't really understand what true idle is. Is the CPU truly at idle? Not that you just aren't doing anything, actually check. Close everything, even in the system tray. Yes, it can idle that low but this is no achievement, what matters is the load temps in a stress test/benchmark. Its also chilly as hell in here and the system has been Curve Optimizer tuned.
PBO refers to Precision Boost Overdrive, essentially an overclock with reduced voltage using a curve optimizer. Watch the video provided. Temperatures between 75-80°C are typical in Rainbow Six Siege; I see 85-93°C during Hell Let Loose on my 7700x. These CPUs are built this way, so I’m confident it’s safe. I can share links to videos that explain why they overheat before limiting voltage or power. If you’d like a clearer understanding, technical details would help.
