It could be a risky move, but I recently purchased a Grandstream GWN7701M unmanaged switch due to its affordability, eight 2.5GbE ports, and a single 1GbE/10GbE SFP+ port. Prior to this, I hadn’t used SFP+ much, as my home network relied solely on RJ45 connections. Together with the switch, I also acquired a TP-Link TL-SM5310-T RJ45 SFP+ module. My idea was to connect the router via the transceiver, thereby freeing up another 2.5GbE port on the switch. While the connection over RJ45 worked fine, using the TP-Link device didn’t produce any activity. All the documentation suggested compatibility, and my supplier’s account manager confirmed it too. However, some sources indicated that not all switches support an RJ45 transceiver, and certain models only work with direct LC fiber transceivers. I’m planning to assess whether I can request a refund for the transceiver, as it seems completely useless to me. Before proceeding, I’ll double-check if others on Reddit have encountered similar issues with cheaper RJ45 SFP/SFP+ modules on other Grandstream switches. It’s possible this TP-Link is the issue, and Grandstream doesn’t publish a compatibility guide. I doubt anyone here has experience with these specific models, so I’m curious about any brands that historically work with them.
