I own a Dell Optiplex 745 that originally came with a Core 2 Duo and 2GB RAM. After upgrading to 6GB RAM and adding a new GPU and storage, the Core 2 Duo became a significant performance limit, making games like League of Legends nearly unplayable. I bought a Q8400 on eBay to replace it, but the PC won’t boot when it’s installed. I’ve tried reseating it, testing different CPU options, and checking for BIOS updates from Dell, though they often fail during fresh Windows 10 installs. Assistance would be very much appreciated.
The specific model of the prebuilt isn't clearly defined. Just because the CPU fits doesn't guarantee compatibility.
On Windows 10 you can usually run the software in a virtual machine or via compatibility mode without needing to reformat or switch OS. A VM would be a practical solution instead of replacing your current system.
If the update tool needs XP or a 32-bit OS, you'd need those to use it. The motherboard model is available through software such as CPU-Z.
