I wondered how much I could extend the C2Q Q8300 with a stock cooler while keeping temperatures below 70°C under load, and I'm running it with DDR2 RAM at 800MHz.
This needs to be uncovered on your own. Try the OC with Prime 95 and observe the performance.
The top 95W CPU from that line was the Q9650 at 3GHz. The quicker Xeons were all 120W CPUs, such as X5460 and X5470. If I had to estimate, a speed around 3.15 to 3.33Ghz seems reasonable. There were some faster 65W models too, like the Q9550S and Q9505S, which could offer more room in that case. I've seen the Q9505S for $20, but it's not commonly available.
