Hi everyone,

I'm exploring a solid upgrade for an old i7 4770 in a near-silent setup aimed at gaming at 1440p. I have some thoughts on the parts I want and would really appreciate any feedback on their noise levels or performance suitability. Please find the component list and notes below.

On this forum, some users caution against pairing Corsair Vengeance with Ryzen processors. I own four DDR4 Vengeance modules (four times 16GB) in a 3800X system, but changed to Kingston DDR5 RAM on a 7950X. It seems better to choose a kit that supports specific EXPO configurations for AMD. I haven’t adjusted settings and XMP worked well for my AMD builds. You might not hit 7200MT/s with AMD, but 6400MT/s could be more realistic.

Having done this for my two previous setups, I want my new build to last as long as possible. That’s why I’m choosing the X870 chipset—it offers more longevity than the B650—and adding an extra PCIe 5.0 slot for an SSD, plus USB C and USB 4 ports.

Country: UK. Budget: roughly £1900 to £2600. I’m aiming for a quiet system, under 22 dB. I check prices on PCparts UK first, cross-verify on Amazon and other sites, and run a small script every two weeks to update my spreadsheet. Any price I see that’s the lowest I’ve found in the past six months will be my choice. I didn’t buy the Be Quiet 850W titanium last week because it’s now at double the minimum—probably I’ll have to wait another month or two.

Skill RAM is safe, as some advice suggested Corsair without XMP might not work well on an AM5 platform. I’m hoping to find a CL28 or CL26 kit if possible.

Other suggestions you made, while cheaper, aren’t as quiet (the lian li looks very similar to the Be Quiet 802, down to the PSU casing). If you have an overpowered “silent” 5070 Ti that doesn’t whine, it could replace the 9070 XT Taichi. A 5080 would be unsuitable due to excessive heat, which would force more fan use.

I own a few Nocua ULN case fans that operate completely quiet; they spin at 800 rpm. Staying below 22 dB will be challenging when using high-performance parts, especially with a 9070 XT exceeding 300W—maybe a non-XT model would suit better.

G.Skill has confirmed the current optimal performance remains around 6000-6400MT/s for AM5, and even with EXPO it shouldn't exceed that range. Useful information.

For the Taichi, we're targeting 340W, which is a 7% boost over stock performance. I plan to lower the clock speed by 5% below stock and then undervolt if possible. The combination of the heavily engineered shroud and reduced power consumption should help minimize noise. All other parts are kept under 20 dB (CPU cooler max 11, fans 15-16). An alternative would be a 5070 Ti OC Strix, following a similar approach but with uncertainty about its quietness and coil whining risk. The PSU I selected should aid in handling short-term power spikes. Any feedback is welcome.

"This Desktop Music Production PC relies on a Premium Quiet Mid-Tower Case paired with a fully modular quiet power supply and DDR5 Memory. As usual, we swap out standard fans for extremely quiet case fans."
This assertion is quite assertive, and whether it aligns with the target of 22dB (+22dBA) remains to be seen. I point out that +20dBA can be compared to rustling leaves. The most silent environments I've experienced are anechoic chambers, while the loudest settings are found in computer server halls where ear protection is essential. I don't consider spaces with large diesel generator units.
My current build (7950X GTX4070) uses a Lian Li Super Silent Aluminium PC-S80 case, purchased new from eBay.

The PC-S80 isn't entirely silent, but the primary air intakes are far from the front fans (about 2ft/60cm), and everything is shielded by two layers of panel work. It's a design from a bygone era and quite different from today's glass-fronted systems with 12 LED fans.
I'm unsure about the specific apps you're using, but certain programs don't benefit much from higher XMP/EXPO/DOCP clock speeds, particularly on AMD processors. More precise timing would likely be beneficial.

CPU Cooler is a BeQuiet Dark rock pro 5 (handles up to 270W TDP when the CPU runs at 120W peak, keeping fan speed under 35%)
Plus 4 Bequiet fans.
Noise level at maximum load: 23 dB.
I attempted to run the PC without the GPU (passive mode) and had to open the case to hear it.
Faced some problems getting the GPU to function; be cautious with the 12V cable—it seems often broken. I tested the GPU in another case/another Mobo, it didn’t work, they replaced the cable. The GPU was fine.
