Imagine motherboards with a similar design to what we see today. The GPU would be easily swappable, just like the CPU. It would be great if AMD and Nvidia released the core graphics chip together, while keeping the other parts on separate sides with RAM slots for upgrades. Of course, the connectors should be compatible between both companies. Someone more insightful could clarify this better.
There's already a standard socket that allows you to change your GPU. It's called PCIe. The only thing "missing" would be socketed VRAM. ~edit: Agree with @Fasauceome , socketed VRAM is not a good idea for performance reasons. Also, speaking of space: While you don't need an extra card, you're actually losing a ton of space on the motherboard. Notice how the model doesn't actually have any PCIe slots for expansion cards and requires laptop style RAM.
