This InfoKB5030509 is stuck on a band-aid, so I'm trying to help you figure out what's going wrong with it right now.
What it is: KB5030509, also called 'Windows Configuration Update', is just a lot of unknown stuff that comes in before the big new release. The Problem: They didn't test it well enough and Windows Update gets stuck forever there. Lots of people online are complaining about this exact same thing. No rebooting or deleting files works to fix it, and I am getting very annoyed with the nagging messages asking me to restart my computer, even if restarting takes a tiny bit longer than usual. The Quick Fix: It took me several hours to figure out how to reproduce this on different systems so I can write down what happened here, but right now my brain is still blurry. Here is what Microsoft says they will do in two ways: either push out a fixed patch KB or make a completely new one that wipes this issue away and replaces it with a working update. YOU HAVE TO BE SUPER DILIGENT if you want to try the quick fix yourself because Microsoft has to apply their own patches when they finally fix this problem. When the official fix comes, you can easily turn it back off by going back to WUMT, clicking Hidden Updates Tab, and Unhiding the update again. Windows Update will see the new update and move on as planned. WARNING: Some of these steps might not actually be needed or even wrong for your specific situation but I am explaining what I did because that is how I learned it. MOST IMPORTANTLY since this guide is short, rm -rf force deletes folders. If you delete the wrong folder, Windows can get seriously messed up. You have been warned. By doing these steps I am free and clear of WW4, the Robot Apocalypse, and any system damage you cause while following them. Instructions are at your own risk in the Spoiler section below ---⟱ Spoiler: INSTRUCTIONS (Shortcuts): - Download WUMT ( https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details...itool.html ) Get it unzipped and ready to go. Don't need it right now but keep it somewhere you can find quickly later if you do need it. - Open Terminal (as Administrator): In Terminal Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution " net stop wuauserv " " net stop bits " Keep these commands running. - In Explorer: Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete everything inside. You will get errors saying files are in use, which is normal. Run: services.msc Windows Update Stop it if you need to set it to Disabled just to be sure. KEEP the Services open. - Back in Terminal " rm -rf DataStore " (do this again for any other folders that were hard to delete inside SoftwareDistribution). The folder should end up empty. " wusa /uninstall /kb:5030310 " Reboot your PC . It will 'Install Updates and Reboot'. Don't give yourself a heart attack but try to navigate as fast as you can to WUMT64. Click the search button (the circle with arrows inside). KB5030310 should show up in the results box. Check the box for it. In the same row where you searched, there is a small box with a crossed-out circle (the 5th icon over). This will hide KB5030310. As such, KB5030509 cannot be installed or found anymore.
where does that quote come from? do you have a link if it breaks for anyone else?
I am testing Trial and Error here. More questions came up below that overlap with my main issue. KB 509, which the Microsoft site says is a "Windows Configuration" update for the big next one, seems useless. I can't find much about it except that Microsoft messed up the patch, leaving tons of people on the internet with the same problem. The update gets stuck in Windows Update and never disappears, even after many reboots or deleting things (except what you posted). It also makes shutdowns and boots slow down and is just really annoying because there are always pop-up ads coming through constantly.
Sure thing. I just suggested adding that detail right at the start so anyone new can understand it better.
Basically it's just the next version coming up soon, and it's already loaded. They did this before too. The real fix only changes the version number and maybe turns on some new features. A current update messed up AMD Adrenaline Control Panel while Microsoft had a great week. If you skip that update, you might not get 23H2.
That might actually happen. They could just change the KB number without changing much, or they might make a new version that fixes 509 problems at once instead of doing two steps. If someone really wants to hide this update, they probably will because I gave them short instructions on how to get it back. You'd go back to WUMT, find the Hidden Updates tab, and unhide it. Windows Update would see it again and start the process over.
That link shows a specific situation: it's point number four in the list. You are using the KB5030310 preview update that was released earlier, so you probably won't be able to install this newer version because your current system is already set up with the previous one.
The co-pilot button was super simple to reach, but a few other stuff is still covered up or not available yet. To see when it came out and all the new things, check that link from Bleeping Computer here: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ne...da...-features/
