I'm facing some challenges while playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. The anti-aliasing quality is quite poor, and nothing seems to improve it—either my hair/beard looks blurry or the grass appears as a grid. I think this is related to dithering. I recall The Witcher 2 had similar problems that might require advanced techniques like supersampling to fix. Additionally, when I increase the water quality settings to High or Ultra, the water displays strange lines, especially from certain angles. My PC can maintain around 60 FPS on a mix of High and Ultra settings, but I don’t know how to resolve these issues. Please see my attached specs.
I installed it roughly four times already, and next time I’ll use a more powerful machine if this continues. Because 120 GBs won’t download quickly through Rockstar’s launcher. I don’t know what to do anymore. Others seem to run it flawlessly in 4K, but I can’t match that performance with my current setup while keeping the 60 FPS I’m aiming for and decent image quality. Sadly, MSAA drains too much processing power at any resolution as well.
Welcome to Rockstar's god-awful implementation of TAA, It's very blurry and causes dithering when at resolutions lower than 4k, the OG Xbox and PS4 had similar issues, albeit probably not as severe. The only thing you can really do is bump up the sharpening in game or of course bump up the resolution scale. And don't even bother with the other AA techniques/turning it off completely, as the game was made with TAA in mind.
I own RDR2 on PS4 Pro and aside from some questionable AA it works fine. It looks like new players keep appearing daily with annoying issues and complaints. I’m considering switching to PC, but doubts grow with time. Just like any case, we’re mainly hearing from those who focus on sharing their problems—and so are the others, the majority, who seem unaffected? Still, it’s a bit worrying.
The worst part is if I skip those problems I talked about, I’m still hitting 60 FPS almost perfectly while everything is pushed to its limit except MSAO. Those aliasing and dithering issues are really too bothersome to shake off.
I completely understand your frustration. It feels like the game was designed with one platform in mind, which makes everything less enjoyable. What do you think about that?
It was clearly designed for the console first, without any argument. Yet I believe Rockstar had the skill to avoid mistakes... Probably I was mistaken.
