Recently, I've been checking Amazon for PC game discounts. Disc versions seem significantly cheaper than their download counterparts. For instance, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is $60 for a download but only $14.95 for a disc. Similarly, South Park The Stick of Truth costs $40 for a download versus $18.50 for the disc. I’m planning to upgrade my PC this summer and am thinking about buying a new case to add an optical drive. Should I go ahead? I’m curious about why prices differ so much—could it be related to game quality or something else? Besides shipping fees, I don’t understand why people would prefer the more expensive download over the disc.
There’s nothing problematic about still wanting to purchase disc copies, since sometimes it can save money. There’s also a personal preference for the physical packaging and design. I appreciate having the boxed versions I own; many of them came without a huge price tag. Even if you end up paying more for a boxed edition occasionally, as long as you’re satisfied with your purchase, it’s fine. Additionally, I’d note that an optical drive isn’t costly, so it really doesn’t add much concern when it comes to a PC setup.
This approach suggests using an external optical drive for flexibility. It lets you connect it only when necessary, eliminating the need for traditional 5.25" slots. Additionally, you gain access to another external drive for troubleshooting or other purposes.
Recently I've been checking Amazon for attractive PC game offers, and I've noticed that physical copies of games are significantly cheaper than their digital versions. For instance, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 costs $60 for a digital file while the disc edition is only $14.95. Similarly, South Park: The Stick of Truth is listed at $40 for download and $18.50 for a disc. I’m planning to upgrade my PC this summer, and these price variations are making me think about swapping my current case for one that supports an optical drive so I can purchase these titles. Is this a wise move? I’m uncertain if the price drops reflect improvements in game quality or something else, so I’d appreciate your thoughts. Otherwise, there doesn’t seem to be a compelling reason to skip the disc versions except perhaps for shipping delays and fees.
I own a game from Steam. I purchased Titanfall on disc. That's all.
It would make sense to use an external drive. That way it stays functional and can be easily moved after installation. While ODDs may have been popular, many still rely on them. For the price here—especially with cheaper options available in the US—it’s better to opt for a regular USB 2.0 burner or reader.
