This Dell XPS model boasts impressive specifications, yet its performance lags significantly in benchmark tests.
About a year ago, I purchased a refurbished Dell XPS desktop directly from Dell. I’ve had positive experiences with them before. Below are the specifications:
12th Gen i9 12900K
64 GB DDR5 SDRAM PC5 38400
Samsung SSD 2TB
Nvideia GeForce RTX 3080
Windows 11 Pro
I’m not sure if I missed something or if recent changes affected performance, but the computer felt slow. For instance, it takes over 30 seconds to boot, which is unexpected given its specs. I ran some diagnostics using Performance Test 11.0, and most benchmarks were very low.
Here are some key findings:
CPU Mark: 3436 (11th percentile)
RAM Latency: 174 (<1% percentile)
DirectX 12 Score: 12 (27th percentile)
All other scores are also quite low (graphics, CPU, RAM, etc.)
I’ve taken several steps already:
Ensured all drivers and Windows updates were current
Set BIOS to default settings
Cleaned up everything in the Windows startup process (no changes made)
Performed malware scans – no threats found
Executed a Dell internal diagnostic from the boot window – passed
Removed RAM chips one by one, rebooted, and checked Memory Latency – same poor results consistently
What might be causing this?

Did you begin using the Dell Windows setup or did you clear the previous installation and start fresh?
Checked that both Intel and Nvidia drivers are current.

I own multiple Dells throughout the years, buying them from the Dell Outlet Store, including the one currently in use. When I get a new one, I carry out a complete system reset using the OS I plan to install. After that, I set up the drivers as required and eliminate all unnecessary software from Dell while reinstating only essential applications.
Yes, I wish I had performed a fresh installation, but now I’d rather avoid starting from scratch if possible. This will be a final attempt to check.
Present temperatures are:
CPU: 22°C
GPU: 33°C
HD: 35°C
The overall performance seems very sluggish given these readings.
The temperatures are quite low, particularly the CPU. That doesn’t seem right.
Some apps like HWMonitor and HWiNFO64 are commonly used to track temperatures. Try installing one or both and check the results.
