I currently own an I5-6600 with an H170 motherboard and a GTX 1080ti. I recently noticed a few used I7-6700k units priced between $240 and $250, and another pair of I7-7700 models. There are two main reasons driving my thoughts about upgrading. First, I’ve always thought my Core I5 was limiting performance for the 1080ti. Second, I spend a lot of time playing Total War: Warhammer II, and the delays between turns are really frustrating. I’ve heard that a quicker or more hyperthreaded CPU could help with that. I’m not ready to replace everything at once—I wouldn’t want to buy a new CPU, motherboard, or cooling solution right now—and I’m also thinking about getting better RAM.

Lol, nope. That CPU has a CPU pass mark of 8,630. To put that into perspective a new $200 - R6 2600X has a CPU pass mark of 14,078. The prices people are asking for these used Intel consumer CPU's is just ridiculous, I have no idea why anyone would pay that.

Look at listings on r/hardwareswap for second-hand 6700k deals. Prices above $170-200 usually aren't reasonable for that model.

A very affordable I3 10100F priced around $80 is comparable to a 7700. This comes from someone who owns a 7700.

It's surprising to think someone would purchase a quad-core processor in 2020.

You can purchase a brand new i3-10100 for $100 and a solid B460 for $90, which will surpass the performance of your old i7. You can even repurpose your existing RAM. That totals $190. You might also opt for a more expensive Ryzen setup if you want to spend more.
