Games with screen tearing often improve when using windowed borderless settings. This works because it reduces input lag and avoids frame rate limits, making performance feel smoother. It’s not a separate menu option since it’s built into the display mode, unlike v-sync which is more about input timing. It doesn’t cap framerate like magic-sync, so it feels more natural.

Ensure your frame rate remains consistent across both scenarios. I've noticed FPS dropping by 10-15 frames when using borderless mode versus windowed, which is usually undesirable. If you're experiencing tearing, borderless might be the fix, but it shouldn't drop below your monitor's refresh rate.

I've heard some discussions about frame drops in Borderless, but I don't usually notice them. It might be related to my GPU or the game version. I still manage around 70 FPS on JC3. Edit: Anyone know why frames get lost in Borderless?

It likely lowers screen tearing since in HL1 fullscreen 300 FPS appears completely torn like paper and borderless feels very solid.

According to common understanding, you need to display everything beyond the game. This includes Windows and all other programs.

From all responses, it seems windowed borderless isn't a clear fix for tearing issues.

I also faced Borderless issues, but it handled it smoothly with almost no FPS drop.

When using fullscreen vsync it only functions with frame rates that are multiples of your refresh rate—like 60, 30, or 15. At other speeds such as 59 or 58, vsync must reduce to 30fps to stay in sync. This issue is currently being addressed by Microsoft, who recommend running applications in borderless windowed mode to resolve it.
