Thirty frames per second sufficient?
Is 30 frames per second sufficient for a positive gaming experience? Would 40 or 50 frames per second feel as fluid as 60 frames per second? Why does 30 frames per second sometimes feel equivalent to 20 frames per second in certain games?
Thirty frames per second without V-Sync can result in inconsistent frame timings, and enabling V-Sync when setting a game to thirty FPS can improve frametime consistency, particularly on a sixty Hertz monitor. Motion blur enhances perceived fluidity, while disabling it at low framerates can cause choppy frame transitions. Raw mouse input appears less smooth than controller input; lower framerates appear smoother with a controller due to analog stick smoothing. Post-processing effects soften textures, which can mitigate noticeable frame transitions. On PC, manually setting games to thirty FPS often introduces input lag not present on consoles, and this input lag is undesirable.
I enjoy open-world video games such as Grand Theft Auto V, The Witcher 3, and the forthcoming Cyberpunk 2077.
