I upgraded my graphics card with the MSI RTX 2060 12GB Ventus, swapping it for my older GT 1030. The PSU was rated at 540 W, which seemed adequate. After connecting the cable, I started a game on Steam at maximum settings. In the Task Manager, the GPU appeared to be functioning normally, but after roughly ten minutes, the PSU failed. Further checks suggested issues with RAM, the motherboard, and even my keyboard/mouse. I replaced the PSU, but the computer still wouldn’t power on—no fans, no signs of life. It looks like the Gigabyte H310 2.0 motherboard died due to a surge from the faulty PSU. The CPU itself checked out, showing no visible damage, though it’s possible internal components failed without obvious signs. Right now, I’m considering getting a new motherboard, but I’m worried about replacing my I7 CPU and not wanting another one. What should I do next?

which psu model was used? the cable seems designed specifically for that exact psu. without another verified working board, it's hard to confirm its condition. edit: if you visit a nearby tech store, they can probably test it. what tests did you perform? if the board is believed to be faulty, did you try swapping components in another system?

There’s no certainty about what can be saved without checking each part with another system. While PSUs might be handled this way, it could destroy the whole setup. I experienced it once—severely damaged, with one HDD crashing inside its case. It was almost new, but I lost valuable music masters that couldn’t be replaced. The backup drive was so corrupted it wouldn’t work again. This shows you can’t assume any component is safe without testing, and even then the outcome is uncertain due to possible lingering damage from the PSU failure.

Regarding the other solutions I suggested; I used a computer I already owned (with a new PSU) and it worked without problems, as I still have warranty coverage. I placed my RAM in an DDR4 motherboard and noticed beeping sounds plus overheating, which suggests it may be damaged. The motherboard connected to the PSU seemed inactive near the ports, indicating it’s likely beyond repair. I plan to take it to a shop since I’m unsure if this is the correct model and lack the receipt or warranty due to distance.
