It seems like an iGPU setup—whether for short-term needs or real applications such as enhancing program speed on iGPU, a potential AMD solution, or as a backup for diagnosing faulty GPU issues. Premium gear with advanced capabilities would make more sense if top-tier CPUs included iGPU support.
Check your hands if you’d like extra CPU cores instead. Consider why we moved from motherboards with many power connectors to CPUs with less space—probably for better memory sharing and faster response times. Think back to my earlier thoughts about getting the 9800x3D; I’m planning to use an air cooler and might skip the onboard graphics in BIOS. Should I opt for a budget card for secondary screens and turn off the built-in graphics, or is it a waste of time, money, and game bugs expecting just one GPU?
It seems the iGPU in a 7/9800x3D might support VRR and HDR, but handling those features while offloading graphics work to another GPU could be possible.
VRR AFAIK operates without consuming any resources; it simply delivers frames right away instead of relying on a vertical blank gap, which can actually conserve resources by avoiding idle waiting periods. HDR consumes almost no resources. Conversely, transferring the frame buffer from a dedicated GPU to an integrated GPU introduces delays and consumes PCIe and system memory bandwidth inefficiently.
my hands aren't up, not because I wouldn't like 2 more cores, but the implications of this setup, the iGPU space barely adds room for these 2 CPU cores if the room is already well taken, if there was already room for 2 more CPU cores, they could just make 9900x3D or 9950x3D anyway, which they probably will at least the 16 core version, there's really no need for more GPUs or running iGPU off to second monitors, even if it is an option, if your GPU is to be high-end, it will handle multi-monitor setup without any major hiccups
I noticed that's disappointing. My RTX 4070 only has one HDMI port for my LG C1, and I want to link my Coolermaster Tempest GP27U via HDMI as well to get MPO and integer scaling. If I switch to a 7/9800x3D, I thought I could move the LG C1 onto the built-in HDMI without losing any features, but it doesn't seem to work that way either.
I’m thinking about upgrading my home server from a 14700k to a 9950X3D. I haven’t had an AMD server before because I need display output, don’t have extra PCIe slots for a GPU, and don’t want the unnecessary power draw of a dGPU. Adding an iGPU made AMD seem feasible again after all these years. Also, it’s tough to pinpoint issues if you assume your GPU is faulty without another one to test against. An iGPU lets you verify everything else before confirming the problem is with the GPU. It’s not as simple as swapping it out from an IO die since cores are spread across chiplets; the core limit comes more from manufacturing yield and efficiency, not just adding more chips.
