Thermal throttling problems – laptop running Intel Core i7-10870H with GTX 1650 Ti mobile.
I’ve been dealing with a persistent problem lately. Here’s what I’m experiencing: My Asus TUF-17 laptop runs smoothly with decent specs, but when I launch Destiny 2 the frame rate plummets from around 100 FPS to just 20 or less. Monitoring temperatures with HWMonitor shows that using the Turbo fan mode causes the CPU to drop to a minimum of 798 MHz and the GPU to 1350 MHz. Despite this, I’ve tried changing thermal paste and adjusting the control panel settings. The Performance profile seems to stabilize things better, but the Turbo mode still triggers throttling. I noticed the heatsink finish isn’t great and there’s some visible wear on the CPU surface. I also experimented with NVIDIA Control Panel tweaks, which helped a bit but didn’t fully resolve the issue. I’m curious why Turbo mode is so troublesome compared to other games or apps, and whether modern heatsinks are really up to the task. Any insights would be appreciated.
