I received a Ryzen 5 5500G build and am glad I have an integrated GPU for when I bring back the 2060. I bought an OEM Dell 2060 Super quickly, which has a heat pipe cooling system and a cooling plate over the VRAM. However, it gets very hot—reaching up to 82°C—and I notice thermal throttling. People often talk about OEM Dell GPUs failing due to overheating. Since this unit only has one fan, I’ve heard they can fail under high temperatures. After seeing the clocks drop a few hundred MHz at peak heat, it seems these single-fan models are prone to issues. I’m considering returning it but wanted advice on what to do. I’ve noticed performance drops in Fortnite when it hits 82°C, and I don’t think I’m making a mistake by switching to something else.

I've owned a Dell G5 5090 with an RTX 2060 for three years. The key was adjusting the fan speed to run much faster than normal. It would often reach close to 80°C on the default setting, which peaks around 1800 RPM. Raising it to 2500-2600 RPM brought it down to about 75°C. However, at that higher speed it became quite audible and the noise was quite bothersome. The built-in fan profile would stay at a minimum of 1100 RPM until temperatures hit around 70°C. I recommend using MSI Afterburner to create a custom curve that increases fan speed more aggressively. Aim for roughly 50-60% at 70°C, 70-75% at 80°C, and full power at 85°C. Also, modern GPUs no longer throttle due to thermal issues—they just tweak their boost clock. Edited May 16, 2023 by DreamCat04

Damn bro, got the secret Ryzen 5 5500G but steer clear of OEM cards. Everything’s been slashed so they barely work. How much did you spend on it? The RX 6600 cost between $150 and $180 and totally beats the 2060 Super.

I paid 200 for it. Just read they don’t really throttle until 89°C, right? It’s normal to see it reach 82? Maybe it’s not actual thermal throttling, but I notice the clock speeds fluctuating. I’m unsure what to do. I think it works fine, just the rumors make me want something else. I don’t want to “fix it if it’s not broken,” so I’m asking here. This is frustrating, and I just want to play.

You adjusted the fan curve in MSI afterburner, but it still reaches 82°C. It seems the 100% at 80°C setting helped somewhat. The issue appears to be more about overheating rather than noise. With current temps reaching 75°C max now, you're right to question whether this card is still reliable. You might consider swapping it for a cooler alternative, especially since your GTX 780 blower card handles heat better.

200 is just a copy, so go for a refurbished 6600 or an older 1080 Ti. Most of the time, used 1080 models aren't worth it because they're cheaper and have less VRAM compared to the 1080 Ti.

Really, while playing Fortnite the temperatures have been around 140°F during peak sessions. I'm almost finished with Cyberpunk and love how the Uni engine boosts performance. On the hottest days I've seen readings near 180°F or higher. It's unclear if I'm using the right measurement for checking card performance. I'm curious if this is typical for benchmarks to show such high numbers. Also, does it make sense that a bench tool could report these extreme values?

your temperatures are normal. dell oem cards tend to overheat. using cooler alternatives would improve performance and reduce noise significantly. that's the main point
