I'm troubleshooting performance on my 15" 2017 MacBook Pro with a 7th gen Core i7 and Radeon Pro 555. The GPU is 2GB, running at 1050p in 1080p settings. It feels like the CPU isn't keeping up, even though it's not throttling in settings. I noticed the Core i7 should run around 2.8GHz but only hits 1.4GHz. The temperatures look normal, and I haven't overclocked. When I switch to settings, it jumps back to 3.5GHz, but it drops back down to about 20fps and doesn't stabilize. Could you help me fix this? Thanks!

Your CPU operates at 66% load with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz—this indicates the game isn’t heavily taxing the processor. As a result, the CPU can lower its frequency to conserve energy and reduce heat output, allowing the graphics card more headroom and potentially boosting frame rates. I’m not sure about the internal layout of your laptop, but it’s likely both components share a single heatsink and fan. This means lower CPU heat can let the GPU run hotter, which might help increase performance. Consider adjusting graphics settings in your system preferences—such as anisotropic filtering, anti-aliasing, and shadows—to fine-tune performance. If you haven’t shared a screenshot of the graphics options, please do so; that way we can recommend specific tweaks to maximize FPS. Also, check if your CPU supports integrated graphics; if it does, try switching the game to window mode to see which GPU is actually being used.

I understand this feels unusual. Before tackling this issue, the CPU ran at 3.5ghz even though gameplay and FPS stayed steady at 42-39. I know the game is GPU-heavy, but it performed better then. I played it at 1050p with low-to-medium settings; perhaps lowering it could help. In the graphics menu I selected "high performance" for Radeon Pro 555, so I’m confident it shouldn’t be a problem.

For medium configurations, performance varies with CPU speed: at 3.4/3.5GHz and 45-39fps, it runs smoothly; at 1.4GHz it slows to 31fps or less. In low settings, it maintains 3.4GHz at 60fps (with 46-29fps at 1.4GHz). The SFX quality remains medium in the medium setting.
