I possess a used Alienware X51 R2. MOBO appears to be a custom build from Dell. The original RAM module came with 8 GB DDR3, which I replaced with 16 GB DDR3. I don’t recall the brand or speed of the original unit, so it shouldn’t matter. Storage: A SATA SSD, brand or specifications aren’t important. GPU: Nvidia GTX 745, 4 GB PSU – an older power supply, details unimportant. Initially, the system ran smoothly. The user often leaves the machine on unintentionally and forgets to shut it down. I turned it off manually; now nothing shows up. A different display also caused the issue. I swapped out the GPU and used another machine, which worked perfectly. I removed the GPU from the second unit (functioning) and installed it in this one, but still no display. Tried reconnecting cables, power supplies, reseating RAM – same problem. On startup, fans spin and LEDs light up; GPU fan operates. No error beeps. A single beep indicates successful POST, yet nothing appears. I’m unsure how to fix it further except suspect the MOBO may have failed. The GPU connector looks intact. Thanks for any advice. If I need another MOBO, can I transfer my OS and preserve all files? I also have some very old computers—Windows Vista PCs, for example—and I’m not sure they’ll support this OS. I was considering using them but doubting their compatibility. Would it be feasible to keep my files if I upgrade to a newer system?
It seems the system kept running unexpectedly, possibly due to the issue you found. My 5900X experienced similar behavior with RAM stability problems. Try reinstalling the RAM and GPU. If this resolves the problem—especially if it works temporarily and repeats after several cold starts—it could point to the cause.
Hi. I've already checked the RAM and GPU several times, but it didn't resolve the issue. It seems like the problem might be with something else. I've tried a different GPU before, so maybe it's not the card itself. Since I used the old GPU in another computer and it worked, it could be related to the motherboard or other components. The black screen when powered on suggests a hardware or power issue. I've also swapped RAM and GPU between computers without fixing the problem, which makes it harder to pinpoint. I'm not sure what's causing it, but I'll look into these possibilities next.
