She’s explaining the situation clearly. I’m using Windows 10 on a USB drive now, coming from Windows 7. I need to reinstall Windows 10 but have a Windows 7 activation key. Can I use that key to activate Windows 10? I’ll make sure to remove it from Windows 7 before doing anything so it doesn’t get linked to both systems.

It's a small change, but removing the key from 10 should let your win 7 key function properly for win 7.
