Mouse model:
Genesis Krypton 550
Hi, my mouse suddenly stopped working. It functioned normally until the cursor began moving uncontrollably and then stopped after a few minutes. After that, I can’t move it, but I can still press the right and left click buttons on my PC. I tried another mouse, which worked perfectly, so I assumed the sensor was faulty. I bought a new one, but the same issue persists. When I plug it in at home, the problem continues—left and right clicks are possible, yet the sensor doesn’t respond. Is this related to drivers, Windows issues, or something else?

Maybe the driver software got mixed up. You might try reinstalling it to check if that resolves the issue. Follow these steps:
1. Ensure your machine is running normally with one of your mice connected. In the bottom left search bar, type in Device Manager and it should appear.
2. Expand "Mice and other pointing devices," then right-click your mouse and select Uninstall Device, after which you can return to the main screen.
3. Power off and unplug your mouse completely.
4. Restart and wait for the process to complete. Then plug the mouse back in properly. The system should recognize the new device and install the appropriate driver, showing a confirmation pop-up. Test the mouse functionality.
5. If the re-connected mouse isn’t detected right away and a driver is still loading, return to Device Manager, click the top line, and choose "Scan for Hardware Changes." If it doesn’t notify you, locate the mouse again and right-click to select "Update Driver."

I attempted that multiple times with both mice, yet the issue persists. The pop-up indicates the device is connected, and in Device Manager it shows everything working correctly. Still, I can only perform left and right clicks, cannot move the cursor, and the sensor remains inactive on both. I’m considering switching to a different brand’s mouse to test, but I’m worried the drivers might cause further complications.

It's surprising that two distinct units of the same mouse model share the same failure. Of course, it's not impossible. If you switch to a different mouse model, you can guarantee a smooth installation. Simply continue with the steps above using the new mouse, keeping the old one in place until Step 4. By the end of Step 3, the previous mouse driver should be removed from your system. When you connect a new mouse, ensure it's the updated one so the system can locate and install the appropriate driver.

I returned the mouse at the shop and they informed me they would send me a new one, which should arrive tomorrow. I’m wondering if there might be some corrupted files on my windows that are causing this issue, and I’m considering a fresh installation of the PC just to avoid the same problem again.

It is very unlikely you've harmed any files due to this mouse issue. When I mentioned "clean install" earlier, I didn't intend to re-install Windows or everything! I just meant that the initial steps would eliminate the current mouse driver from your system, preventing it from being accidentally reinstalled. With a new mouse, the system recognizes its identity and searches for the correct driver.

I received a SteelSeries Rival 3 mouse from a friend. After plugging it in, it began moving the cursor on its own for a few minutes before returning to normal. However, with the Genesis mouse, it doesn't work at all, and it remains the same.

So you have another mouse and it seems to function properly. However, it appears we haven't removed the device driver for the previous model yet, so we can't be sure if the new mouse is using the appropriate driver. If you're keeping the new one, review the steps from my first post to confirm the correct driver is applied.

Updated, I received the new mouse, which is a Genesis but not the same as the previous one. I removed the other mice from the PC and installed the new one successfully. It’s functioning properly now, suggesting the drivers were causing issues only with the old model. Thanks for your assistance and time. Have a great day.
