Hello, I'm looking into the best M.2 chipset for my i7 13700K. The price gap is significant (>150 EUR). On the B series board, the K CPU is available at a reasonable cost (~25 EUR), while the non-K version is only slightly higher. I'm not planning to overclock, so I focus on undervolting for quieter operation and better efficiency without sacrificing performance. Power limits for P1 and P2 should work on both B and H series boards. The number of USB and SATA ports is sufficient on a B series board, and RAID isn't a priority. The DMI 4.0 ×4 versus 4×8 doesn't seem to offer much difference. A Z790 chipset appears better than a H770 if I don't aim for overclocking. Let me know!
Avoid H770 because their chipsets often fall short, but B760 boards offer solid value, especially when you prefer fewer or no overclocking and want a board with around 6 or 7 USB ports on the back.
I'm also thinking about an i7 13000 setup for photo editing. Would the i7 13000k work just as well with the B760 or Z790 chipset?
for overclocking your 13700k consider the z790 chipset. otherwise, opt for a solid b760 board offering strong power delivery if you need better value. i suggest the one listed but keep in mind prices vary by region. for ddr4 options, check the mag tomahawk ashtock b760 toma hawk with the mentioned features. if available, it’s a solid choice on newegg.com.
Thanks for the feedback. I think I’ll skip overclocking since I believe Intel and the motherboard makers already handle it. The available performance is limited compared to what it was a decade ago. I don’t see the benefit in learning the details, especially since I don’t play games. On my previous system from about eleven years back, I used the ASUS bias auto-overclock—it wasn’t as precise as manual tuning, but it worked for me. As a photographer, I’m more focused on photo editing benchmarks and single-core CPU speed than on gaming. I was considering a Z790 or Strix-E chipset for better performance, but if I can afford the Z790, the B760 might not be worth it if its build quality is inferior. I’m also curious about how the BIOSes compare between the two chipsets and whether they affect overall speed. I should look up online benchmarks for both to see which performs better.
B760 chipset isn't suitable for my setup since I require at least four M.2 slots and four SATA connections. As a photographer, I need ample storage space.
