I’m taking a bit of a risk here, but creating a fresh account would be wise. Here’s what I’ve been through. As someone who enjoys assembling computers, I’ve built around a dozen projects for friends and family. Now I’m aiming to make my own. I ordered some parts and picked up a used Zotac Amp 1080 TI from Facebook Marketplace. Upgrading GPUs can be tricky, but I’ve had good cards before. My main issue is that the card works and has video output, yet it crashes whenever I run games or heavy apps on the Zotac Firestorm.
I’m using an EVGA 700 GD for power delivery to the +12V rail—it can supply up to 699 watts at 58.3 amps. From what I’ve seen, this should comfortably support a 1080 TI. I checked drivers and GPU BIOS multiple times, confirming everything else is fine. The card doesn’t show overheating, but could there be a hotspot? I’m not sure if the thermal sensors are detecting it properly.
I’ve also tried undervolting the graphics card to around -50°C on both clock speeds. That helped a bit, letting me run games without crashes, though instability remains. The Zotac Firestorm works with the 5600X at 70% power, but I’m still finding it hard to get full performance.
I read elsewhere that some power supplies struggle with the 1080 TI, and others mention its components wearing out over time. I’m stuck and really need advice. For my build, I have an ASRock B450M Pro 4 R5 with 5600X, 16GB RAM, a 1TB NVMe SSD, a 2TB Seagate Barracuda drive, plus the Zotac 1080 TI Amp Extreme and a Cooler Master Q300L case. The cooler I’m using is the one that came with the 5600X. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I attempted to switch the card into a different setup, but the same issues persisted—applications would freeze for roughly 30 to 40 seconds before crashing. The temperatures were notably high, with a GPU reading around 72 and a hotspot of about 86.5°C, which might indicate a thermal problem. I disconnected all non-essential components without success. During the Heaven benchmark test, the GPU clock speeds varied significantly between Firestorm, the benchmark itself, and the hardware information, though I’m unsure if this matters. I also have some new thermal paste in stock.
