I've boosted my GTX 980 in MSI afterburner with core voltage +87, power limit 122, temp limit 91°C, core clock +180, memory clock +310. In other games that support overclocking—like Rise of the Tomb Raider, GTA V, The Witcher 2 and Shadow of Mordor—I work smoothly and stay stable. For Witcher 3, I haven’t noticed any issues; it seems the game handles OC cards fine. You might just need to lower the overclock a bit for that title.

You can reach maximum Core voltage, power limits, and temperature settings. It seems your games are failing due to an overly fast Core clock. Try deleting the +310 from the memory clock and gradually reduce the Core clock until stability returns.

It really happened since many users experienced the issue and even the developers responded, warning against overclocking the GPU as it often causes crashes.

It's not just about games like GTA V being demanding on the GPU. If your overclocking isn't steady, it can cause crashes.

Overclocking can improve performance in most games, but instability indicates a faulty overclock. Adjust clocks or boost voltage to achieve stability.

the game i mentioned stopped working completely when using an OC level of 10. it seemed exclusive to the Netherlands, needed a particular motherboard chipset, and even though I didn’t own that chipset, I managed to get it running on my system.

What are your specifications? Did you also remove the memory overclock? Would it work to play the game without it?

Refers to Witcher 3, and you're playing with an OC version too, everything works smoothly.
