We changed our system yesterday from an i7 5820k with an ASUS X99-A board to an i9 9900k paired with a Gigabyte Z390 motherboard. Technically everything ran well. On the software side, Windows seemed unstable after the upgrade. After resetting it, we cleared the drivers and removed old components. We installed all necessary drivers, reactivated Windows (it worked surprisingly), and everything functioned smoothly. This morning I was handling file transfers between drives—intensive work. The Windows Explorer kept freezing or crashing intermittently, without a clear pattern. I’m struggling to find help, as the issue only appears during large file moves. For instance, transferring photos in batches works fine, but moving a folder with 83 photos (about 700MB) causes the program to freeze early. The only error code I received was 0x80070079 about a semaphore timeout, and searching online only led to guides for network adapters and drivers. If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated. It seems to only cause problems when moving substantial amounts of data, not just small files.

Semaphore helps manage access between threads, preventing conflicts during writes and reads. Have you installed any performance upgrades or checked your BIOS/chipset updates?

We’re still running at stock performance, not overclocked yet. I just added all the drivers from Gigabyte’s site. Updating the BIOS and chipset? I’m not sure how to do it without worrying about resetting the entire operating system.
