I powered off my computer before bedtime and left it to update. When I opened it, it was still in the same update process as when I last checked. Why is this taking so long? Should I restart it or let it finish updating? Is there a possible issue or bug involved?

It could be that the issue occurred, perhaps your internet dropped temporarily or you're using a pirated version of Windows.

I once saved a cracked Windows 7 on an old computer I found near me. I checked if updates worked fine, but it seemed to stop working altogether. This seems more like a crash than a typical update issue.

You can sometimes bypass updates, but when the system identifies a fake copy it halts the download and installation right away. Upon starting the computer, you might see a notice indicating your Windows isn’t genuine. You can also install updates without using an activated product key. However, an unactivated OS will likely prompt Windows to say your copy isn’t real or that you need to activate your key, which then blocks any future updates.

There are flaws that cause the operating system to treat the product key as if it were valid, enabling free access to updates and other features. ADJUST: It also circumvents Microsoft’s security measures, tricking the system into believing it’s an authentic copy.

I’m sure I have a valid version of Windows 7. It’s possible the connection interrupted, so I’ll check again.

The concept likely came from removing Windows Activation Technologies. This practice dates back to around 2010, and modern updates already include similar safeguards to prevent unauthorized activation copies. Many routers also provide logs that show connection issues or router shutdowns.

I also used WAT for that. That experiment was conducted about two months ago and it continues to function.

Removing WAT is effective, though it doesn’t restore everything exactly as it was in 2010. A fresh update is needed, otherwise Windows will still be marked as suspicious and require starting over.
