I’ve made the bootable USB and started it up successfully. When I try to repair it, several options appear, but I’m unsure which one to choose. The available choices are: Startup Repair Command Prompt, Uninstall Updates, UEFI Firmware Settings, System Restore, System Image Recovery. In the menu I can either pick one of these or turn off the PC.

I think System Image Recovery is the right choice. But a clean installation might be better.

I've just finished a fresh Windows setup and everything seems to have started up correctly without any pending updates. Your thanks are appreciated. I have another query about the installation process. During setup, Windows prompted for a Microsoft account; I entered my details and now it's using that account as the login method. It would help to know if it's possible to switch to a standard desktop account for logging in and out, or if the Microsoft account is essential.

Excellent news! It's finally ready for full operation at the battle station. Feel free to use a local account. You should be able to create an offline profile in the settings app.
