Attempted to set up DVD shrinker on a Windows 10 preview laptop. Instead of the expected zip file, downloaded DVDShrink_downloader_by_DVDShrink.exe. Initially dismissed the warning in Chrome, then proceeded with Windows installation. The installer reported failure because it couldn’t locate an internet connection. A later scan using Malwarebytes detected a suspicious file named PUP.Optional.Somoto, which seems to be adware. The official download page offered two files—404KB and 290KB—while the English forum was filled with Russian discussions. I retrieved an older executable from a backup and verified its integrity using MD5 checksums (EFC4643607D821EE5B1E306B5181917C). This suggests avoiding dvdshrink.org and opting for reputable sources. Before discussing copy protection, I believe dvdshrink is only suited for compressing unprotected discs onto single-layer media. Personally, I use it to inspect DVDs; if the initial scan fails, it likely indicates a deep scratch or encoding issue. I installed it to test a replacement IDE DVD drive in the laptop.
