Using an ethernet splitter is not cost-effective and causes problems. You might be facing issues with auto negotiate best speed—full duplex is recommended. A £40 8x2.5G unmanaged switch is affordable, and I’ve found Cat8 to be very budget-friendly. Since I rely on it regularly, it’s a practical choice.
When purchasing in bulk for commercial use it tends to be more cost-effective than buying retail, though it remains pricier than Cat6a and offers no clear advantage unless you plan to upgrade to 40Gbps later. A standard Ethernet splitter set can still function adequately in certain situations—such as connecting IP phones and PCs in an office where the network isn't fully utilized—but it's not ideal for high-speed needs, as it restricts each connection to 100Mbps. It’s hard to define what someone would call an "adapter" instead of a switch in this context.
When I see "Ethernet splitter" or "adapter," my mind goes to connecting two pairs to each device, which might restrict performance to 100Mbps or even less based on the design and materials. This setup could be seen as a substitute for a network switch, but it raises doubts about the value of $3.11.
Those splitters are inexpensive and straightforward to use. They don’t require high costs or top-notch quality, just as you wouldn’t need gold-plated cables. You can craft your own by connecting keystone jacks to a short cable and leaving them hanging, with a single RJ45 at the other end. Of course, the construction and material might be poor for that price, similar to buying the cheapest cables or jacks available. The person asking hasn’t shared much about the cabling setup and didn’t mention having two adapters, so I assume they’re not a set of these splitters. Also, since the download speed is gigabit, it’s unlikely these splitters are being used.
At this stage, more details about the cabling and this “adapter” are necessary for anyone to help troubleshoot further, and it makes little sense to keep searching for other causes until the basics—like swapping cables or ports—are addressed.
It's not too complicated. Use regular cat6 cables (this whole cat8 thing is overkill) and a proper 1Gb internet switch instead of the splitter you're using. I know this thread is still pending, but I had to share my thoughts. Sorry.
