I’ll end up on that hill where the 5800x3d feels like a waste of money at $450, while the 5900x is now around $380 on sites like Newegg or Amazon and works much better in most areas except gaming. Who really sticks to games on their PC? It’s not true that the 5900x is only for gamers either. In my opinion, the two Ryzen models that stand out are the 5600 and the 5900x. The 5700x, 5800x, and 5800x3d are way overpriced compared to their value versus the 5600. The 5600 is fine unless it matches the price of the 5600, otherwise it’s not worth the investment.
I believe most folks concentrate on gaming and the rest will still work adequately enough. Like with most matters, returns on investment decline as spending increases relative to benefits. The pricing on the 5800X3D isn’t that poor compared to the i9-12900KS. You also receive additional value beyond a standard factory build. As for other activities outside gaming…that largely depends on the individual. For me, all current CPUs are significantly faster than what I need for non-gaming work, making the 5800X3D worthwhile. Still, I’m holding off on upgrading. The 10900KF still performed well.
I'm not sure what everyone thinks, but keeping lots of Chrome windows open and using Spotify while you play doesn't really mean you're multitasking. The real tasks like rendering and editing are usually measured in CPU tests that suggest some CPUs are better for non-gaming work. Most folks end up buying things they think will help them stream later, but it's not a proven strategy.
Did you notice a pattern in past builds where graphics cards were consistently the most costly part? I remember a CPU around $350, a video card between $180 and $250, and a MOBO costing $75 to $125.
