I intend to revisit the game after completing my initial run. I want to avoid spoiling anything by joining a BG3 subreddit, so I'm reaching out here... Right now I'm in the underdark and just met The Sovereign, so please keep the main story quiet. Without revealing too much, why do I only have Shadowheart and Astarion in my party? I saw several spoiler-free YouTube videos about game tips, but they all featured a full team of Shadowheart, Astarion, and Gale, plus a purple robe wizard. Did I overlook someone?

yeah you'll want to wander around the starting map a bit more before going to any other location. I think at least one of the guys is in the town by the grove but can't remember. I'm about to start my 2nd attempt at a playthrough because I fucked up and got everyone in and around the grove killed so I'm still like lvl 4 and the underdark is a death sentence for me edit: and I got sucked in to Yakuza Kiwami so I'll probably get back to BG3 after I finish that

Gale appears promptly as he nears the Emerald Grove, the arm protruding from the portal. You also overlooked Lae'zel, it's unclear if it was even feasible, Wyll during the initial goblin battle, and Karlach amidst the wilderness in act1!

Yeah, I didn't wonder a whole lot but I guess I somehow missed him. I honestly felt like I'd seen him, but he didn't join my team. I'm all lv4 as well, underdark doesn't seem too bad for me. but i'm moving super slowly. Goblin camp was super difficult. I basically used Astarion to stealth attack + dashing away far + escape combat repeats to clear out like 50% of the camp lol. Oh yeah, I've seen Lae'zel. The dialogue options I chose at the time got her released but she was hostile. I turned on non-lethal attacks and proceeded to kill her with my firebolt lol. I didn't know that only applies to melee. I just went "Oh well" and moved on lol. I have no idea about Wyll or Karlach though lol. I may very well met them just don't remember their names.

Could you clarify which portal you're referring to? I need more details to help identify it.

You spot a blueish opening in a cliff, right after discovering Astarion, probably not what you expected

I began with Lae chick, discovered Gale in the portal, then explored the damaged ship and located astarion... according to my memory, the other chick was on the beach if I'm right (I've only been playing for a few days). I didn't notice Wyll is available yet—this is my first time hearing about it, possibly because it's limited to just four characters in the group. I don't recall finding Karlach either.
