The system of Theseus or The story that reshaped nothing
This has been a process. A week and a half ago my PC stopped showing video. I left it on standby overnight, no power or shutdown. Devices still received energy. Restarted the machine, but not even the mainboard greeted me. Occasionally, one screen would flicker and I thought it was the graphics card. I inspected all cables, switched to HDMI instead of DisplayPort, tested with consoles, etc. Reset CMOS and changed RAM positions (two 8GB modules Corsair CMK16GX4M2D3600C18), but nothing happened. Purchased a 6700XT, installed it (kept it in place), still no success. I brought it to a friend, gave away his RAM (an 8GB M378A1K43CB2-CRC from Samsung) and it worked. This made me suspect a faulty RAM stick. Discarded the bad one and returned home. Plugged in, tried DDU, updated AMD GPU software, rebooted, still no video. I thought it was random until I got a 2x16GB Corsair kit from Amazon. Installed them and everything functioned. After rebooting for Smart Access Memory, no video again. I figured the motherboard might be damaged. Ordered a new one (rev 1.2, not 1.1), received yesterday. Tried my original RAM in the friend’s system and it worked perfectly. That confirmed the board was the problem. I planned to clean cables and swap it out. But now I’m thinking about moving to a remote cabin—maybe the issue is physical. I swapped in a 3600 chipset with my 5800X3D, still nothing. One stick of 2x8GB Corsair failed completely. Two sticks in new slots didn’t help. A single stick by itself? It worked. Finally, I got video again with the 2x16GB kit. Still puzzled. I’m now considering a cabin in the woods, away from tech. Assuming it’s the CPU, I replaced my 3600 with a 5800X3D. Still no luck. One stick, two slots—nothing. Other combinations? All failed. Eventually, I installed the 2x16GB kit and got video once more. But I kept searching, hoping for a repeat. Now I’m frustrated and regretful for not acting sooner. The QVL info is confusing: it was posted in September 2021, and Corsair recently updated their RGB parts. It seems some modules might not be compatible, even though they look similar. The QVLs don’t mention my current specs, which makes me wonder if I’m missing something obvious. I’ve changed the BIOS in March with my 5800X3D and it worked fine until this issue began. The documentation says nothing about support for Corsair’s white RGB models, which is odd since they’re essentially the same part. Why aren’t newer versions included? I’m starting to question whether fixing the RAM or the board would have solved it. My build feels incomplete—just a few parts, no video. I’m left wondering what’s really going on and if I’ll ever get it right.
I've also attempted to replace the power supplies with my previous ATX unit and built the setup without using the case, but it didn't work.
