Lately I've been experimenting with Linux because Windows feels too expensive. Even though I've tried various virtual machines, nothing works—my bootable USB didn't boot and I ran into errors about corrupt files. Now it just freezes, and after a few attempts to install Linux Mint, the process stops abruptly. It's frustrating since I've never faced so many problems before.
Linux Mint has been running smoothly for over 100 uses, maybe closer to 200, without any issues. What system are you connecting it to? Desktop, laptop, or something else? Are you using a hard drive or an SSD? Essentially, why do you install software before testing its functionality? Does the machine function properly when powered on from the USB drive, allowing web browsing with browsers like Firefox? Can you launch LibreOffice applications such as Writer?
You don't require VM software; simply boot the USB drive directly on your PC without installing it. Performance won't be optimal, but it demonstrates basic functionality. For a USB stick with persistence storage, changes will be retained even after reboots. You might need to turn off Secure Boot in BIOS or use Fedora if it's enabled. If issues persist, consider using another USB drive.
