Hello there! I haven't been active on this platform since about 2019. Lately, I've been facing frequent stutters in games, even without streaming or using Discord. This hasn't happened before. I cleaned my PC today, ran some tests, updated the drivers, and checked temperatures and voltages—everything looks normal. My CPU is a 3700x, paired with an RTX 2070 Super and 8GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM. The system is running smoothly, but it's acting up. I suspect there might be a Windows-related issue, though I'm not entirely sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
You might want to install DDU in safe mode to clear any Nvidia drivers and retry. Proceed by downloading DDU, extracting it to a new folder—both zip and 7zip versions are available—and avoid running DDU immediately. Obtain the most recent drivers from Nvidia, but refrain from installing them yet. Disconnect from the internet, either unplugging the cable or turning off the network adapter (this stops Windows from installing outdated drivers, which can cause issues). Restart in safe mode; there are several methods to achieve this, but the simplest is pressing the Windows key and R simultaneously in the run dialog and typing "msconfig" without quotes. You might want to install DDU in safe mode to erase all Nvidia drivers and attempt again. Proceed by downloading DDU, then extract it into a new folder—both zip and 7zip versions are available, but don’t start using DDU immediately. Obtain the most recent drivers from Nvidia, but refrain from installing them yet. Disconnect from the internet, either unplug the cable or turn off the network adapter (this stops Windows from applying outdated drivers, which can cause conflicts). Restart your system in safe mode; there are several methods to achieve this, but the safest is pressing the Windows key and R together in the run dialog, typing "msconfig" without quotes. This opens the System Configuration window—navigate to the Boot tab, check the box for "Safe Boot," click Apply and OK, then restart. After rebooting in safe mode, expect some features to fail temporarily, which is normal.
If you restart normally, continue with the previous steps: press Win + R in the run box, type "msconfig" without quotes, go to the Boot section, uncheck "Safe Boot," click Apply and OK, and avoid restarting at this stage. Move DDU to its extracted location, launch it, and follow the prompts—select Nvidia from the dropdown, then choose Clean and Restart. Wait for the process to complete; the screen may flash briefly, but no action is needed in safe mode.
After the reboot, the system should exit safe mode. Proceed to install the downloaded driver, restart your machine if prompted, and reconnect to the internet. Verify everything is set up and see if the issue persists.
If the problem remains, monitor CPU and GPU temperatures while playing the game. If they are within normal ranges, return to idle mode and check for resource-heavy applications consuming RAM, CPU, or GPU. Also, be aware that on Windows 11, mouse polling rates can affect performance—high rates (like 1000Hz) may cause stuttering in certain games. This issue is reportedly being addressed, but hasn’t been rolled out universally yet.
Good luck!
Okay, thank you! I’ll try it later tonight and update this thread when I do. I forgot to mention that I also have my CPU overclocked at around 4.2ghz with 1.26v and I’ve had that OC since 2020 when I built it. Again, I’ll do what you suggested and update this sometime tonight when I can. Cheers!
Alright, did as you said. It still stutters on DBD it seems but I tried Overwatch 2 and the temps were at 61 for the cpu, about 63 for the gpu. No stutters really at all. It just seems to be Dead by Daylight and other games because Overwatch 2 ran perfectly fine at 146fps with basically zero stutters.
Either way, thank you for the input! Much appreciated.
