Hey there! I’m facing a puzzling issue with my modem and the connection between it and my router. I’m using a Cisco EPC3212 modem and a Fritzbox 4020, which are both functioning well. Since the router isn’t sufficient for my home, I upgraded to a Netgear R8000P. However, when I connect the new router to the modem, there’s no connection at all—even after trying various Ethernet cables. Initially, I suspected an Ethernet port issue and returned the faulty one. The “Link” indicator on my modem seems to show no signal, but connecting another device or router works fine. When I switch to a different modem, everything functions properly. My last attempt was to contact my internet service provider for a replacement, but they insisted it was a hardware defect and refused to send a new one. They even said I couldn’t get a different model since it worked with others. I’m stuck with a 250€ router that seems fine, but not compatible with my setup. Anyone have suggestions? Should I consider using a modem from another provider? I’d appreciate any advice!
Sounds like a duplex mismatch or negotiation is failing on the link speed auto detect. Does the R8000P or modem have the capability of setting the link speed manually on the LAN port(s)? Try setting it to 1000M full duplex and/or 100M full duplex and see if anything springs to life, I have seen duplex issues in the past on 1G links but we are talking like 10 years ago... would be unusual to see it these days.
Sad how shit the custom service sometimes can be. Back in March I had connection issues and my IPS sent me a new fresh modem. Yesterday I called again because my ping would sometimes spike to 2000 and fall back which for me as a six siege player means I'm getting kicked out of rounds for high ping. They sent another new modem without questions. And then there is you and they wont even sell it to you...shame
Assuming you have the EPC instead of the DPC variant, the modem should be reachable at http://192.168.100.1 using your browser, which is the standard default IP for Docsis modems in bridge mode. The login details might be the default (admin/admin) unless you changed them, in which case a hard reset is likely required. Check the advanced settings to find duplex configuration options; it’s usually set to Auto. Try 1000M full duplex and observe the behavior. If access is lost, perform a hard reset and it should revert to Auto mode.
Varies by location around the globe. In the US, cable companies must let us use our own modems. I haven’t paid Comcast a monthly fee in five years. I’m currently using the SB6141. If the modem you’re seeing works with phone service, things could be different. Phone service might make compatibility more challenging. Your provider, Comcast, offers just one retail choice and requires you to go through several steps to set it up. However, any regular modem listed in their supported devices will work fine for them.
Thank you for your efforts. I couldn't access the modem settings because the password from the manual didn't work and none of the other ones I tried either. I reached out to customer service again; my issue seemed to be handled by someone else who was familiar with it. They confirmed they'd send a technician at no cost and offered a replacement modem if needed.
