So there was a moment when I chose to switch to Linux on my laptop, but it didn’t go well. While trying to revert back to Windows, I probably made an error. Before that, my machine would start instantly without any trouble. Now, it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours just to boot. Occasionally, it freezes and shows a blue screen (I haven’t seen the exact codes yet, but I’ll check later). It doesn’t seem to gather any information before crashing. Usually, it tries to fix itself on the next start, asking if it needs repair, or it will switch back to Windows.

During those long waits, the loading screen becomes stuck and moves extremely slowly—almost like a single pixel shifting every few minutes. If that helps, during a Linux setup it mentions CPU overload for varying durations. After a crash, the boot menu might say “ME Firmware Downgrade” with the MSI logo appearing.

My usual way to get things running is just letting it sit for hours until I return to a working PC, or facing a loading screen/BSOD and powering off to restart. This process has turned my laptop into a desktop-like situation at times.

I’ve checked all the drivers, updated the BIOS, tried upgrading the Intel firmware, and even downgraded and reinstalled the BIOS. I followed the upgrade guide carefully. Windows restarts are still failing now.

I’m hoping someone can help me figure out what’s going on. I have a few ideas: BIOS problem, bad storage drive, corrupted firmware, wrong Linux version (Sparky, Ubuntu, Mint), or issues with the SSD. I’ve used USB flash drives with ISO files to install Linux, but that doesn’t seem to work anymore.

The laptop’s specs are listed here: MSI GE62 Apache Pro 6QD. About a year after buying it, I added a WD Blue 1TB drive and a Samsung 960 EVO 250GB SSD in the NVME slot. That happened right before my Linux troubles started.

I’ve tried fixing everything—BIOS updates, BIOS reinstalls, driver changes—but nothing seems to work. If you know what’s causing this, any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ll answer as soon as possible.

I also performed the SFC and DISM scans, and repeated the SFC scan, but nothing resolved the issue. I’m considering a fresh Windows installation instead, though I’d prefer not to do that. Please let me know if you can offer any assistance or guidance.
