She asked me to modify Microsoft Office so it would function for her. I received her laptop (HP Pavilion with Windows 8) and discovered the software was no longer active on her system. It felt odd since the machine was only four months old and she mentioned a trial version was pre-installed. I wondered if she might have overlooked an activation code or if there was even one to begin with. If anyone has had similar issues or knows more, please share. Thanks.

MS Office costs $100. It isn't a free option.

Office is commonly built into preassembled systems, particularly desktops. I once owned an HP laptop that included the complete Office suite, and my Alienware M14x also came with it. Look inside the packaging for a license or similar info. It's odd since HP typically bundles a lot of unnecessary software, along with Office and a basic Photoshop version.

FreeOffice FTW! and the price of a download that won’t land you in trouble or at least avoid the bad list.

I haven't experienced a free office setting since the XP days personally. Apart from Win8 tablets, as mentioned by Profosist.

Office never comes free on PCs. It’s always been a paid service. Those who had it included in their bundles with alienware or HP, etc., paid for it—guaranteed. (Based on 7 Years in computer retail for Europe’s largest retailer)

It varies by shop. Used to find packages with one year of AV and office support, but I haven’t seen them recently. Probably because free alternatives like LibreOffice are more affordable, and now with Office 365.
