I constructed a setup earlier using an ASUS X570 Prime-P, AMD Ryzen 3600 along with its standard heatsink. I handed it over to my brother—now considering the 5800X. In short: he disliked the intense heat from the default heatsink and attempted to remove it. I explained why it should have been secured better, but he managed to pull the heatsink out while the CPU was still in place. Upon inspection, the CPU showed bent pins and some thermal paste residue, along with a damaged motherboard socket. After cleaning and realigning everything, I tried reinserting the CPU, but when I powered it on again, the motherboard lit up, the chipset fan spun, the GPU fans whirred, and the motherboard LEDs flashed. There was no UEFI prompt or error messages, just a black screen. I cleared the CMOS but got nothing back. It seems my brother may have damaged the CPU and possibly the motherboard. I also noticed the GPU wouldn’t register video on this system anymore—does that mean the CPU, GPU, and motherboard are essentially non-functional? Even though the motherboard keeps running, it feels like a fragile device: good parts end up broken.
It's often a frequent *misconception* if that's what you're referring to, yet it's far from typical. This scenario doesn't usually occur with Intel or AMD Threadripper since they use LGA and include a complete chip retention bracket, unlike just the arm that secures the pins. Yet, anyone familiar with the process knows to gently twist the cooler to ease the adhesive before removing it completely.
