The Ryzen 9800X3D is not responding properly during gaming?
My friend recently bought a new AM5 PC equipped with the Ryzen 9800X3D and an MSI X670E Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard. He is experiencing performance problems. He has updated the BIOS, reinstalled Windows, and updated all drivers and chipsets. Despite this, when playing CS2 (he doesn’t play anything else), his CPU reaches 75c, but each core’s clock speed caps at 500mhz. We have tried disabling PBO, enabling it, applying negative offsets, ensuring SMT is active, checking the high-performance powerplan in Windows, and resetting the BIOS to default settings. Still, the CPU consistently locks at 500mhz. Interestingly, during Cinebench it maintains its clock speeds well, though it hits 95c—synthetic benchmarking. It seems stable under load but not in CS. He suspects a thermal protection mechanism, so he’s adding more fans to improve airflow. I’m not sure if this is the main issue. The CPU generally holds higher speeds during normal use (over 5000mhz) but drops to 500mhz only when CS is active. Anyone have suggestions or next steps? Thanks.
My friend has bought a new AM5 PC equipped with the 9800X3D and is running the MSI x670E Gaming Plus WiFi. He's experiencing some performance problems. When sharing a troubleshooting thread, it's important to provide detailed system information. List the specifications as follows: CPU, CPU cooler, motherboard, RAM, SSD/HDD, GPU, PSU, chassis, OS, monitor. Include the age of the power supply unit along with its make and model. Also, note the BIOS version for the motherboard at this time. When testing in CS2 (he doesn't play anything else), his CPU reaches 75°C but each core's clock speed caps at 500MHz. You might want to ask him to stress-test the system with other games to determine if CS2 is the only affected title.
I find it difficult to accept that the temperature reaches 75c while the cores operate at 500 MHz. Also, I haven't seen this chip running so low. My own device never drops below 2500 MHz even when idle (with a temperature of 45c). It doesn't make sense for it to reach 75 with all cores at 500 MHz. This seems inconsistent. Your readings might be incorrect. How are you tracking the clock speed? And how is the game performing? You mention the clock speed but complain if the game runs smoothly, suggesting the issue isn't with the CPU.
how does the gameplay feel in cs2? does it have any lag issues? what graphics card is your friend using? try some third-party tools to check fps and real-time cpu boost clocks while playing. for instance, msi after burner or capframex. many people say it might just be a problem with the software rather than the actual cpu slowing down too much.
If the situation matches what's being reported (slow clocks and high temperatures), it points to a potential CPU cooling issue.
This CPU can achieve 95c before throttling. It's unlikely it's throttling at 75c. Running at 500 MHz wouldn't be feasible, and the system would likely crash under such low speeds. The reported performance seems inconsistent with the actual readings (possibly from bus clock).
