I assembled this system back in 2018 using a 1300x with Gigabyte B450 DS3H and GTX 1060. Later I upgraded to a 3600 processor and added 16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM. It runs solely on a Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD in the M.2 slot. The motherboard often caused issues with four 4TB hard drives; while the support page offers solutions, it hasn’t fully resolved the problem. Now I have two 4TB HGST NAS and Seagate drives, both functioning well with external cases but not with the board itself. I’m searching for a board that can accommodate larger storage devices, ideally exceeding four terabytes.
Why not move them outside? External drives are ideal for critical files because they’re less likely to get affected by power spikes or other issues. Keeping drives in enclosures reduces the load on your main system and makes it easier to access data across different platforms. These enclosures usually draw less power than the whole setup, so isolating them offers better protection. Additionally, you avoid needing to replace your motherboard when it becomes outdated.
I concur with what was mentioned. It seems Ryzen boards have a real problem with HDDs, particularly 3.5" models, since they require more power than 2.5" ones. This issue appears in different ways, and using the external HDD one at a time works better. In short, I believe the chipset is the main factor rather than the motherboard itself, and there’s probably little that can be done about it.
After losing a 5TB drive used for games and photos, I switched to a 1TB and 500GB SSD from a recycled laptop. Now I keep only essentials on an external 4TB drive. With faster internet, downloading games isn’t as important anymore, so the performance gap between internal and external storage doesn’t matter much.
I've used a 2.5" Toshiba SSHD for years without any problems, but larger drives consistently cause issues. Switching to a 1TB SSD has improved performance significantly, and the old Toshiba is mainly for backups. It would make more sense to store it on my laptop, though it only holds 1TB and the laptop already has a 2TB HDD, which isn't ideal since I often run out of space. I have many gameplay videos that could be re-encoded to save room, but it's really slow because of the performance hit.
I located this MSI board and the compatibility page supports certain drives up to 14TB. It's still a B450 model, but I plan to keep the R5 3600 for the next 3 to 5 years—it's priced near $75.
I very much doubt the board is causing any issues with 4TB drives. MUCH older hardware is completely happy with significantly larger drives than that. If you want to do something, then buy an LSI SAS HBA (Eg Dell H310 or one of the many other variants) and use that for your storage.
