You mainly use your PC for gaming and productivity tasks. For gaming, you opt for the 3600, while for work or efficiency, you choose the 2700x.
The 3600 offers better value in most situations. Even with two fewer cores, it lags only about 10% behind the 2700X in demanding multi-threaded scenarios, because of its significantly stronger single-core performance. This makes it clearly superior for gaming and other tasks that don’t rely heavily on threads. A 3800X would be comparable to a 9900K, but the 2700X isn’t that much better. Asrock offers several B450 boards, though not all are outstanding. Which model are you evaluating, and have you thought about MSI’s MAX boards like the B450-A Pro?
The setup looks strong, but I'm uncertain if the Ryzen 3000 is included by default—verify that first to avoid issues. MSI's B450 Mortar MAX fits in an mATX case and offers marginally more VRMs than the Steel Legend, which should comfortably support a 3900X at standard speeds. I've previously installed this board with a 3600X and it performed reliably.

It would definitely be a great option in my view. If you can't obtain it, you might contact your store about the Steel Legend or any similar board to confirm compatibility with Zen 2, as those models usually display a "Ryzen 3000 ready" label. If not, they could possibly upgrade the BIOS for a modest cost.
Looking at Amazon and similar sites, the additional £30 for the MSI board could feel quite steep given the questions about the Steel ASROCK board supporting 3600s. I think I should calculate the numbers and see if the extra cost makes sense compared to the potential risk involved.
