Hi,
I just had my 5th build with this graphics card, everything worked fine until recently... I woke up one day and tried to start my PC as usual, but it wouldn’t boot into Windows and the screen went black. When I tried again, after about 20 seconds, the screen showed green cubes and then turned completely black. I changed the BIOS setting from Overclock to silent, and it worked for a while until now. I attempted to switch back to Overclock mode, but the screen stayed black in both settings.
I decided to disconnect everything and remove the card. I checked the pins and PCIe slot and found that the thermal paste was inside the slot and it was dry. I’m not sure if this affected my graphics card, but I’m wondering if it’s still functional. Can someone help me figure out what to do?
Also, one pin on the card looks different in color compared to the others, matching the area with the thermal paste. I bought the card two years ago and have never cleaned or maintained it since then.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
Thermal paste won't damage anything on your system even if you put it in your CPU's socket—just ensure it's non-conductive. With your discrete GPU removed, you can clean the gold contacts on the PCIe slot fingers using an eraser (not the board). Handle carefully to avoid knocking SMDs off the GPU.
