I built my computer five months ago, after installing Windows. I adjusted the memory speed to 3200MHz in Bios, but I experienced GPU overheating while gaming and even during idle periods. The only solution was changing the Radeon settings and setting the wattman profile manually to manual fan speed at 100% when temperatures reached 70°C. It has been working for five months, but now I find myself repeatedly having to load the wattman profile each time I restart my computer. This seems unusual.

Is this typical? Can overclocking memory raise GPU temperatures? Is there a method to automatically save a wattman profile during system restarts? Why does my GPU run at 80°C even though the memory is set to the default 2133MHz? How can I maximize performance without overheating? I shouldn’t have to play games on low settings.

What am I doing incorrectly?
Here are the details:
- AMD Ryzen 5 2600
- ASUS ROG Strix B450-F
- G.Skill TridentZ RGB 16GB 3200MHz
- XFX Radeon RX-590 8GB
- Corsair CX550M
- Corsair Crystal 460x RGB (3x Front + 3x Exhaust fans)
- Samsung 1TB 970 Evo M2 SSD

Sorry, I believed you were referring to the GPU VRAM. If your WattMan profile isn't stable, the driver will restart automatically (often shown by a brief black screen in-game). GPU issues typically don't trigger restarts; the most common outcome is the game closing and opening your desktop window. WattMan attempts to save previous settings before a reset or shutdown, so if it was reset to auto from a crash prior to that event, it will load accordingly.

you can perform a basic check
take off the side panel from your tower, if the GPU runs cooler then the case airflow isn't functioning (perhaps the dust filters need cleaning?)
if the temperatures remain similar then the issue likely lies with your GPU cooler

I removed the side panel and front panel to allow direct airflow into the front intake fans. The situation remains unchanged. My GPU temperatures will reach 80-85°C during load in games, and they drop significantly once I stop using it. I returned the first GPU, suspecting a hardware issue, but it still has the same problem with another card. It seems the GPU cooler might not be the cause either.

80C under full load is quite typical, my 1070ti usually stays near 80C under full load, with the fan set to about 77% at this temperature.

verify your ram there seems to be an incompatibility issue with certain kits the system is showing all ram in use update your bios to the latest version also check what cpu cooler you have it should be mentioned that this specific card may have thermal problems if you decide to return it bring a different brand

I recently tried playing the new Call of Duty and experienced a "Fatal Error" crash twice. After the third attempt, I managed to play a full game. My maximum GPU temperature stayed at 80°C. My RAM is showing all 16GB, though I had it set to 3200MHz for the first five months. Some recommendations suggested resetting my BIOS to default, but I’m now using its default speed of 2133MHz. It appears the crashes occur when the GPU hits 82-83°C.

It seems like a GPU problem might be occurring, considering the brand's recent issues with the new 5700 AMD cards. Also, it could point to a VRAM concern. Check the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBN2KDiw-V8

3200MHz is a pretty significant jump over 2000MHz.
Windows messes up WattMan profiles, simply restart your computer immediately after a cold boot and your profile should apply properly after the restart.
Some things you can do to improve temps:
Undervolt - involves setting Frequency to Dynamic, and Voltage to manual. Generally most cards tend to run on auto with 50-100mV more voltage than they need for stability.
Here's a guide
I put together.
I re-applied thermal paste on my 1300MHz RX480 and temps went from 85C @ 2400rpm to 73C @ 1100rpm.

I'm still facing problems even after resetting BIOS and keeping the memory at the default 2133MHz. Even after a few hours of use, when I need to restart, my wattman profile doesn't load automatically. After restarting and installing crash, it keeps reminding me to load the profile before I can play. So I have to restart again, load the profile, and then everything works. It's really confusing and doesn't seem normal. Even with the standard wattman settings, I shouldn't be experiencing overheating issues right out of the box. Some people claim they can run up to 85-90°C, but my system crashes when it drops below the 80s. Something is definitely wrong here.
