I didn't notice a D3.0 modem available locally for some time. DOCSIS 3.0 should support speeds around 300mbit. Upgrading the modem can improve your downstream bandwidth, though router issues will still persist. The "protocol 0800" problem seems tied to early kernel versions.
The claim of a 1 Gbps connection isn't feasible with a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. If the user actually has a Gigabit connection, they'll need a DOCSIS 3.1 modem to achieve those speeds. Regarding the router, it seems the user might require a new device due to potential software issues. Alternatively, they could test compatibility with DDWRT, which is free and requires no cost, though it may take some time.
You can use a 1gbit link with a slower modem if you have your own hardware. Even with a D3.0 modem, expect around 300mbit downlink. DDWRT isn’t easy for beginners. A wrong setup might leave you with a non-functional device needing complex fixes that most people can’t handle.
No US Cable Cos will handle this. To get one gig, they must implement Docsis 3.1. Every Cable Co needs this. The performance shown on the box doesn't matter. As I mentioned earlier, the user wants a GIGABIT connection, not just 300 Mbps. If they insist on full speeds, DOCSIS 3.1 is essential. Period. If you opt for a slower modem on a 1 Gig connection, you're essentially wasting money on a Gigabit link when your device will never deliver those speeds due to your modem.
