My machine shuts down and then restarts, keeping all my programs running even after a long time. Others seem to stop completely when it powers off. Why is that happening on mine while it doesn’t on theirs?

Are you taking a break instead of stopping completely?

The entire house went dark, with no electricity for the lights or refrigerators. Is it safe to assume it’s going to shut down? I don’t have an UPS system.

During hibernation, all RAM information is saved onto the hard drive. Once the computer is powered back on, it restores RAM using the data stored on the drive.

Your device went into hibernation mode. It may also have had hybrid sleep activated by default, which triggered a hibernation after a period of inactivity. Even if you didn’t manually start hibernation, the system could have been put to sleep and then resumed in hibernation when you were inactive.
