I shared a discussion about this before it ended, but it stopped working, so I’m starting fresh. Whenever I play a game with just one monitor connected (usually I have two) and with additional software using the GPU, the performance drops significantly and the game stutters heavily. After my previous post, I upgraded to a new CPU (5600x) and a new power supply, but neither fixed the problem. I also reinstalled Windows without success. Therefore, if it isn’t related to drivers, the CPU, or power, it likely lies with the GPU? I’m not sure about RAM since I ran Memtest on it several times without finding any issues, and the GPU is the only component directly connected to the monitors.
Create and model monitors? Which connections (HDMI, DP, DVI-x) are you employing for each display? Is it important which monitor is the exclusive one? What Project settings do you employ: PC screen only, Duplicatg, Extend, Second screen only? When only a single monitor is connected do you mean that both power and video cables are removed or just the video cable? You might try launching Resource Monitor with two monitors active. Perform regular tasks like work or gaming with both monitors connected. Then disconnect them normally and observe any changes in Resource Monitor. My idea is that an application may be running, attempting to locate the unplugged monitor to check status, apply an update, or contact support—otherwise the system stalls or slows down.
I'm working with an ASUS VG249Q as my primary display using DisplayPort, and an HP 22cwa connected via HDMI. Even though I switch monitors or connections, the same problem continues.
I use extend, but with only one monitor plugged in—meaning the second monitor has its video cable and power disconnected. So the computer is connected to just that single screen (my ASUS VG249Q).
I’m considering trying this setup even though I suspect it might not be the real cause, since the issue still exists after a fresh Windows install.
I would really appreciate having another system to test this on, like installing a graphics card in another machine and checking. Right now I only have one.
EDIT:
How should I use the resource monitor for this?
The problem appears only when another program (such as Obs, YouTube video, Zoom meetings, etc.) is running alongside the game. This, combined with a fresh Windows install and CPU/PSU upgrades, leads me to believe the issue might be related to my GPU.
Running resource monitor, obs, and a game open while unplugging the second monitor with the game running on the main one caused strange effects across the screen. Restarting the game resolved the issue, but only within the game and on the title screen. I haven’t managed to reproduce it yet. Is this a GPU glitch?
