I recently acquired an MSI 1440p 144Hz 1ms response time display intended to function as a standalone monitor connected to my laptop. However, I’m unable to access the advertised 144Hz refresh rate within its settings—it consistently displays only 60Hz. I'm currently in the process of assembling a new computer, and would appreciate any insights regarding potential compatibility issues.

My current laptop specifications are: HP with 8GB of RAM, a 2TB hard drive, and an Intel i5 processor utilizing integrated Intel graphics.

The planned components for my upcoming PC build are: a Ryzen 1800x, an RTX 2060, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 2TB SSD, and an MSI 1440P 144Hz 1ms monitor.

Regarding the laptop's i5 processor, its integrated graphics might not be capable of achieving high speeds when running at 1440P resolution, or perhaps you are utilizing an incompatible cable.

You're likely correct about the cable; I purchased a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, but it failed to recognize when connected—I believe an HDMI to DisplayPort cable would work better. My laptop has a standard HDMI output, while my monitor utilizes a Digital Visual Port (DP) input.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that for many HDMI cables (version 1.4), the options are typically 1440P at 85hz, possibly down to 100hz. It’s likely that your computer and monitor would require HDMI 2.0 to achieve 1440P at 144hz.
