I accidentally entered a 3060ti with a 500W power supply in my old system. It works well for a while, but when I connect my headphones through the rear IO, the PC shuts off immediately. The fans on the graphics card spin up quickly after turning it on, yet there’s no display. Plugging in my old graphics card fixed everything, but the rear barrel jack now doesn’t work. What are the chances my 3060ti is damaged?

500W power supply is the advertised wattage of the PSU. Could you tell us the brand and model of the unit? How long has it been in use? What was its previous function before you added the RTTX3060Ti?

If you connected the GPU to a less capable device, maybe you affected its performance.

it was functioning well with a 1060 3gb and a ryzen 5 1400, using an evga 500 watt psu. the motherboard is an asrock b350m. ram is 16gb at 2666mhz, paired with a skillz ripjaws cpu cooler from amd stock wraith stealth. i’m posting for a friend who’s currently asleep. i suggested he upgrade the parts rather than buying a prebuilt setup from facebook marketplace to save money, but i went for shortcuts and assumed the 500w would suffice. tomorrow he’ll get a new power supply, and i observed him installing his gpu. his motherboard had an odd pci slot, so i thought maybe the clicking wasn’t supposed to happen—perhaps just the headphones shaking and loosening the gpu, which needed only a re-seat. i’m trying not to fix anything myself and instead consider selling it on ebay for parts or refunding him.
I'm happy to hear the GPU is correctly installed and a replacement is coming soon. Do you know the model number of the new PSU? EVGA often has inconsistent quality in their premium products, so any low-quality unit like the one you're thinking of should be replaced quickly.
Just a note, if you're using the newest BIOS for that motherboard, you could add a dual-channel DDR4-3200MHz RAM setup with minimal latency and pair it with a Ryzen 5 5600 processor.
What is expected is that the protection circuits will shut down the power supply before any harm occurs. In high-quality power supplies, it will automatically reset itself if you disconnect the device from the wall and reconnect it. More affordable models often include fuses that can be replaced yourself. With very poor quality power supplies, the outcome is uncertain. You might even risk starting a fire and damaging your home along with your computer. My opinion is that only the power supply itself will be affected. If you remove a GPU running at high load, the situation is much worse than just an overload. Fixing a GPU is not recommended unless you already understand the basics discussed here. Check out a YouTube tutorial on GPU repair—there’s a reason it can cost hundreds of dollars and many cards are often beyond repair.
