Hey everyone! I just installed an RTX 3090FE, an MSI x570 Gaming Pro Carbon, 32GB of 14cl 3600MHz RAM, and a 850W Platinum PSU. My CPU is the Ryzen 9 5900X and it gets quite hot—starting at around 70°C when I boot up, dropping to 50°C in idle but still spiking high sometimes. The BIOS fan curve is set to max at 75°C, but the Noctua NHD-15 can't keep it below 88°C, so I switched to an Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360. After reapplying thermal paste four times, it seems to work better.

I’ve noticed the CPU hits up to 84°C for a bit longer—about 20 seconds—while playing light games or downloading in the background. I was hoping to keep everything under 80°C, but it’s tough. I’ve tried tweaking airflow in my Fractal Define R6 (opening it up and adding a radiator), but it still gets hot during stress tests like benchmarks. Even single-thread tasks stay around 76°C, but when I run multiple cores (2-6 at once) while downloading or unpacking files, it spikes to 86°C.

The core temps are fluctuating a lot—normal for gaming—but max out between 4.4 and 4.5 GHz on all cores at full load, with the advertised 4.8 GHz for single-threaded tasks. The speeds look great, but can I really cool this down to a more comfortable level using regular methods? And if you think these temps are normal, it makes me wonder if the cooling system isn’t enough for stock performance. Thanks in advance for your help!

Your system should have strong airflow to maintain performance. Even the best cooler won’t help if the air isn’t circulating properly.

Updating the BIOS can improve Ryzen performance more than expected. Are you checking the hotspot temperatures? I believe Ryzen displays those values. Probably not—I haven’t tried Zen CPUs myself.

All the tools you mentioned—CPU-Z, RIVA, and Core-Temp—show consistent results. Their purpose isn’t clear to me, but it seems my BIOS is current. MSI Live Update confirms that too.

If your heavy tasks run cooler than expected, something unusual might be occurring that requires attention. 84°C is typical for Zen3; it's strange that this happens while you're lightly loaded and your temperatures are actually lower. Your boost settings seem correct, with all cores running at 4.4GHz normally. With the 3090, hot air from the GPU should flow through the CPU cooler, leading to higher CPU temps. What are your peak voltages? Consider resetting your BIOS to the default settings so we can pinpoint the problem.
