I chose to attempt some overclocking with my MSI gtx 970, following the guidance on that page.
Initially, performance improved with VRAM and core clock increases, but FPS dropped from about 70 to 40.
After trying to stop the overclock, FPS remained unchanged.
The issue also appeared in games, such as lagging in Arkham City.
Is there a solution to resolve this or is it a permanent problem?

it wasn't a permanent fix—it was just a software overclock. You can undo it in Afterburner and restart the PC if needed, though it shouldn't be required.
